Keep Gate Clear

Ensure no debris, grit, rags, or grease accumulates around the penstock opening. Obstructions prevent full closure and can overload the operating mechanism.

Operate Regularly

Penstocks should be exercised periodically. Gates left in one position for long periods may seize due to corrosion or sediment buildup.

Protect Sealing Faces

Seating faces and wedges must remain clean and undamaged. Minor damage causes leakage even when the gate appears fully closed.

Lubrication Control

Apply only manufacturer-approved grease to spindles, guides, and bearings. Over-lubrication attracts grit and accelerates wear.

Corrosion Prevention

Check protective coatings regularly. Wastewater environments are aggressive — coating failure leads to rapid corrosion.

Safe Operation

Never force a gate. Excessive torque may bend the spindle, damage threads, or crack the frame embedded in concrete.

Routine Inspection (As Required / Quarterly)

8-10 Years (Major Overhaul)
